Ness of Brodgar Trust secures grant from National Lottery Heritage Fund
The Ness of Brodgar Trust is delighted to announce a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This generous award is specifically for work with Orkney schools, for volunteer training and community workshops, and for a major upgrade of our web presence ( www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk).
£ 238,240 has been awarded for the three-year project, Ness of Brodgar: Past, Present & Future, which will keep Orkney and the Ness at the forefront of worldwide archaeological interest.
The Ness of Brodgar is a unique monumental Neolithic site which has been under excavation for 20 years.
Excavations at the Ness end in August 2024 and have been a major focus for tourism in Orkney. The post-excavation phase of scientific analysis, cataloguing and archiving will gain momentum immediately digging ends.
Our aim is to maintain and strengthen interest in the Ness and Orkney’s archaeology via work with schools, community workshops, volunteer training and a new, comprehensive, website, all made possible by the NLHF grant.
The National Lottery funded project will enhance public engagement with the Ness of Brodgar, keeping people up to date with our research and creating a legacy of information and resources for when our work is done.
Over the next three years, we will be working with local schools, with farmers, construction students, ecology groups, artists and tour guides. The involvement of such a wide range of people in Orkney will help us to spread the word. It will also enrich our own understanding of the Ness as we move towards publication.
Nick Card, Chair of the Ness of Brodgar Trust said: “We’ve always tried to involve people in the Ness and have built up a wonderful group of volunteers over the years.
“This new support from The National Heritage Lottery Fund gives us the opportunity to extend that reach, bringing in groups we’ve just not been able to work with previously, and to have a future-proofed website. We’re excited to do so and thank players of the National Lottery who’ve made this possible.”
