Among our many site visitors last summer were pupils from Glaitness Primary School in Kirkwall. Here they share details of their Archaeology in Orkney project.

We are in Primary Seven at Glaitness Primary School and recently we have been investigating different historical sites around Orkney. We started our project after a visit to the Ness of Brodgar in June last year. We followed this with visits to the Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe, Skara Brae and the Standing Stones of Stenness.

When we went back to school, we decided to carry out some research into other important sites. We chose the Knap of Howar in Papa Westray, the Broch of Gurness in Evie, St Peter’s Church on the Brough of Birsay and Midhowe broch in Rousay.

We split into small groups and gathered information from books and the internet. When we had completed our research, we made small presentations. We included drawings, maps, 3D models of the sites and Powerpoints. We made sure all the visual items had captions describing what the things were.

Once it was finished, we invited a few people to come and see our displays.

We learned lots about Orkney and its history. Our favourite part was the visit to the World Heritage Site.
