Diary Extra – 3d model of Trench T’s timber plank
Another new model from Trench J supervisor Paul Durdin.
Organic materials do not survive well in the acidic soil conditions at the Ness of Brodgar, so the regular appearance of very small wood fragments, within the interior of Structure Twenty-Seven, over the past week or so was a real surprise.
This particular piece, a section of a worked plank measuring around 50 centimetres long, caused great excitement. Its incredible preservation will enable an unprecedented analysis of tree species, wood source, use and dating.
